St. Edward's University in South Austin was established in late 1800, when Mrs. Mary Doyle bequeathed her 498 acre South Austin farm to the Church Catholic and Father Edward Sorin of the Congregation of the Holy Cross for the formation of an institution of higher education. Father Sorin was also the founder of the University of Notre Dame and had a distinguished and accomplished.
In 1878, the first year of school, composed of three students from school age children who gathered in the buildings that were originally part of the farm of Mrs. Doyle. More Later, in 1885 the new school president, Rev. PJ Franciscus, improved schools and the Charter of the Academy, as was then, and changed the name of College Sainte-Anne. One option was installed by Franciscus, and enrollment increased, and later the same year, Peter J. Hurth became president of the school.
In 1903, a fire destroyed most of the main building, but the building was repaired in the fall, and later, a tornado hit the campus in 1922, and significant damage was sustained during the storm. In 1925, the school received the Charter of the University, and again changed its name to St. Edward's University and the Faculty has increased again, especially with the priests of the Congregation Santa Cruz, and, however, enrollment has increased.
During the 1940s, large numbers of students using the GI Bill after serving in the army, and the number of students again increased dramatically. Over the next twenty years, most competent and well trained presidents managed school, and as more of its members, faculty enhancement and women began to attend school in 1966. Part of the school has been called Maryhill College at that time, and accepted students, and in 1970 the two schools were combined and St. Edward's became a co-educational facility.
In the decade 1970, many new programs were introduced to the school including an innovative program of the performing arts and the New School, who was an undergraduate program for adults. In 1986, the first female president was named, Dr. Patricia Hayes, and in 1990 the school had reached a strength of 3,000 students, its highest enrollment ever.
In July 1999, Dr. George Martin began his tenure as president of the school, and Martin has launched a plan for a decade to put in Sainte-Anne League Leaders in the nation, small, private institutions. Martin was 23 president of St. Edward, and is the latest in a list of leaders and managers fixing prev.
Today, St. Edward has a staff of over 5,300 students and has won numerous awards for his achievements in the field of education, including mention recently in U.S. News and World Report praising curriculum. The school is proud to offer a liberal arts education which incorporates critical thinking, community service and ethical practice among its students. St. Edward's University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools award baccalaureate and Master's School of Social Work, the program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
