Symbols: fire extinguisher signs to diagrams of aircraft become an increasingly common sight in our world. Some people consider that the proliferation of the symbol to be a sign of declining literacy rates in the world, and with them the decline of civilization in general.
But the increase is the symbol of everything wrong – and certainly not new.
Although there is some truth to the idea that the emphasis symbols correlate with illiteracy. Symbols, after all, represent words and ideas. If you can not read the words, only how to include a development idea is to see a visual representation of the same. If the visual is good and clear – as the warning signs still is – the idea should be offered. In some cases, the idea-as-symbol has meaning beyond the limits of the original symbol.
Take advantage of the symbols of the early Christians, a major source of common symbols the European tradition. The success of the Church Catholic Theological establish dominance depended on the ability of the church to contain and marginalize heresy, especially the heresy related to the doctrine of the Trinity. But how to convey a subtle concept of "The Holy Spirit" to audiences that have never had any schooling beyond twelve hours a day pushing a cart of their feudal lords? The answer: to express the Holy Spirit as a drawing of a bird, and put the drawings where people can see in the common meeting places, repositories of knowledge. In other words, in the church, – in the windows.
Think of the windows that diagrams of the airlines in the Middle Ages.
Once the Holy Spirit has been generally regarded as a bird, the concept – already vaguely defined in the existing religious literature – began to take on new meaning to "stretch their wings." The idea of angels with wings began to emerge, human figures, the mine aspects of birds. The concept of heaven as a "bigger" place, a kingdom in the clouds, was not at all given small by the use of the symbol of the birds. And the symbols of the abbreviation of contemporary ideas – in particular, the "dove of peace" – are inconceivable without the bird original religious imagery. A wave concept must be communicated to a lay audience. It must be translated into a symbol. And suddenly, the symbol takes on new meaning – has changed his language, the language of symbols.
This may be an exaggeration to think that one day cultural historians consider our signals with the fire extinguisher regularly to study alchemical manuscripts and other rich veins of symbols. And it may be an exaggeration to think that the signals a warning to today's endless subtle meanings suggest to historians of the future – they can find new religions, philosophies, new ways of looking at the humanity. A thing is not an exaggeration, however: we live in the era of the symbol. And we've been for a very long time.
Fire extinguisher signs should be fixed above all fire extinguishers – but which ones are correct? www.FireProtectionOnline.co.uk has the answers
