Preacher of the Word and the Holy Ghost, a poem by Peter Menkin
This September 2009 I visited a Southern Baptist Church in Vacaville, CA, USA (north of San Francisco, 80 miles or more). My reason was interviews Pastor Bob Lawler on the topic of Sunday School for a story.
After the interview in his office during lunch, we talked about spiritual and religious matters, too. The goal, inspiration, and practice the sermon, the preacher Part of the discussion.
Lawler pastor of First Baptist Church in Vacaville, the number of belonging to a family unit is about 500, said the sermon at his church could go 45 minutes or more. Is the Holy Spirit at work in the sermon, as many as currently stated in the Sermon on the outcome of the notes for reference, not completely written or unwritten.
I said in my church (Episcopal in Mill Valley, CA, USA), the sermon spends about 12 minutes. Certainly the liturgy of the word is highlighted in the Southern Baptist tradition.
As part of our inter-religious dialogue, it was agreed that the Holy Spirit was at work. My friend Linda, who helped me see Pastor Bob and his church to see the interview, agreed.
This morning, as inspired by his comments on the Holy Spirit, wrote this poem. My efforts as a response to Pentecost, in September and a wonderful visit of the First Baptist Church, where Pastor Leroy Gainey was written by email to the visit of my story of why Southern Baptist Church called Sunday School was very successful. I am glad that Pastor Leroy made me talk with Pastor Bob Lawler. A very good interview and hospital visit.
